“I think this is the best scenic version of the Ruth Maier story I have seen so far.” was written by Norwegian writer Jan Erik Vold, the author of The Diary of Ruth Maier, which became the inspiration for the production.
The story of the Jewish refugee Ruth Maier in the mirror of the diaries of today’s girls. What do our diaries say about us? And how much has their content changed over the last century? Has it been only the times that have changed, or have we changed as well? Ruth Maier was born more than a century ago, but her story still speaks to us. Against the backdrop of wartime hardships associated with her Jewish background, she dealt with the same issues as girls today.
The production works with the diary as a medium for preserving memories that is universal. It takes the diaries of contemporary female students and looks for intersections with Ruth’s. And there are more than we might expect, although the starting points of their lives are very different. There’s a bit of Ruth in each of them.
A Girl’s Diary is produced under the lead of the Studio of the Drama Education for the Deaf, employing a variety of elements such as movement theatre, pantomime, image-based expression, speech and sign language. It is intended for both hearing and deaf audiences.
